How to Actually Take Care of a Full Canvas Suit

A full canvas suit is built to improve with age. Almost nobody knows how to let it.

Most damage done to a good suit isn't from wearing it too much. It's from caring for it wrong — over-cleaned, poorly hung, packed the way you'd pack a t-shirt. Here's what actually keeps a full canvas suit alive for decades instead of years.

Dry Clean Less Than You Think

Dry cleaning solvent is hard on wool and harder on canvas — it breaks down the natural fibers that give full canvas its shape over time. Once or twice a season is enough for a suit in regular rotation. Between cleanings: spot-treat, brush it down with a natural-bristle clothes brush after each wear, and let it air out on a hanger overnight before it goes back in the closet. Sweat and body oil do more damage than dust. A brush handles dust. Airing out handles the rest.

Hang It Right

A wire hanger is the fastest way to ruin the shoulder of a good jacket. Use a wooden hanger with curved, contoured shoulders that match the jacket's actual shape — the canvas underneath is floating fabric, not a rigid form, and it will hold whatever shape it's hung in. Give it room. Suits packed shoulder-to-shoulder in a closet lose their drape faster than suits with an inch of breathing space on either side.

Travel Without Ruining It

Fold it and it creases where it shouldn't. Roll it, don't fold it, if it has to go in a suitcase — and use a proper garment bag on a hanger whenever that's an option instead. A steamer beats an iron every time; heat and pressure from an iron can flatten the canvas's loft permanently. Steam relaxes the fibers back into shape without ever touching them directly.

The Long Game

This is the part most suits never get to experience: full canvas, cared for properly, molds to the body that wears it. The shoulders soften to match yours. The chest drapes the way yours actually sits. A suit that's been worn and cared for correctly for ten years fits better than it did on day one — because it's had ten years to become, quite literally, yours.
